High Stakes Poker Makes a Step In Reverse

The 7th year of High Stakes Poker will be demonstrated on GSN beginning this month, but regrettably there have been some changes and very few of them are good. The show will have a new sponsor as Gabe Kaplan who was on the 1st 6 seasons is gone. He is being substituted by former Saturday Night Live cast member Norm MacDonald. Kara Scott will still be on the show as a co-host.



Changes
GSN is making various other changes to the show as well and they don’t seem plus side either. The show will now contain a mix of pros and amateur participants. High Stakes Poker will still have some leading participants like Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan but none of the members of Full Tilt will be on the show. That means many of the leading poker participants in the world is not going to be on the show this year including Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Patrik Antonius, Eli Elezra and Gus Hansen. The show will still have Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Laak but the loss of leading participants will surely be apparent. It looks like High Stakes Poker will be sponsored by PokerStars and they did not want participants wearing Full Tilt attire.

Bellagio
The 7th year of High Stakes Poker was filmed at the Bellagio Hotel in Vegas. The three-hour episodes will be demonstrated on GSN beginning this month. It is possible to even watch the broadcasts in 3D if you have DirecTV even though I have no idea the reasons you would want to watch poker in 3D.

Downhill
High Stakes Poker is not going to be the same. Gabe Kaplan was an terrific sponsor and was well respected in the poker network. He was better in mix with A.J. Benza but he was still good. Norm MacDonald is a comedian who is not a poker expert. Kara Scott was good in her role but she is not an analyst. The days of getting insightful poker commentary look to be over and that is a shame. Gabe is a very good poker player and understood the high stakes competition. He will be missed. Now you can just hit the mute button due to the fact you are not going to hear anything insightful from MacDonald. The other issue for High Stakes Poker is the loss of all the Full Tilt participants. Dwan made the show worth viewing by himself. He will be missed as will other leading Full Tilt professionals.
