In breaking news for the Kentucky Derby, Uncle Mo is not going to be running in Saturday’s competition as a result of the gastrointestinal ailment that he has been struggling with for some weeks now.
The decision was stated Friday morning that the colt would be scratched. Uncle Mo was the 9-2 second fave for winning the competition.
3 vets were brought in to examine Uncle Mo on Thursday, and their advice was that the horse would not be able to run in the Derby. The doctors are currently puzzled as to whether the GI infection is a primary or secondary cause of the horse’s deficiency of appetite and lowered energy, however. So Uncle Mo will continue to be at Churchill Downs for the weekend and could visit yet another vet, but is not going to competition.
This is the second time in the past three years that among the favorites was scratched at the last minute. So with Uncle Mo out, the competition field has been lowered to 19 total mounts. Dialed In is the 4-2 fave at this time, but the line will probably be revised based on the withdrawal of Uncle Mo. Repole also owns Stay Thirsty, who’s is 20-1 shot and will be running in the Kentucky Derby, but Uncle Mo was the team’s top chance for a victory.
